Being an Art Collective, Then? examines what it means to practise collectively at a moment when the terms “collective” and “community” are increasingly expected to signify care, solidarity, collaboration, and resistance to competition. Rather than treating these terms as inherently progressive or stable, the publication asks what kinds of labour, responsibility, exhaustion, and uneven availability are concealed within collective life.

The zine brings together writings exchanged between Park Hye-in and Shin Hara since 2025. Its editorial structure reflects this ongoing process of writing together: main texts, comments, and drifts appear as distinct yet interconnected modes of attention. Instead of resolving differences into a unified voice, the publication preserves revision, hesitation, interruption, and return as constitutive parts of collective authorship.

Across questions of infrastructure, perception, affect, technology, ecology, care, labour, and artistic self-organisation, the publication considers how collective practice is made possible, how it becomes burdened, and how it might remain transformable before being fixed into identity, obligation, institutional usefulness, or permanent form.

The publication does not propose the collective as a stable organisational model. It approaches collectivity as an ongoing negotiation: a practice that must continually be revised, refused, resumed, and reconfigured. In this sense, Being an Art Collective, Then? serves as a shared itinerary for questions of collective life, artistic practice, and forms of being together that the authors have carried separately and continue to develop through writing and collaboration.
